Mariah Carey is a real "Heartbreaker"
In honor of this week's "Guess Who" feature, we're bringing you a throwback track from none other than the fabulous, the legendary Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey is a Long Island girl, born in the town of Huntington. Allegedly, she was named after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah". Carey's parents divorced when she was just three-years-old. Mariah lived with her mother, who worked a series of jobs to support her family. Carey's mother was a trained vocal coach, and began to train her daughter's voice from an early age.
Mariah began her career in 1988, when she met Tommy Mottola at a party. Mariah released her first album in 1990, co-writing many of the tracks herself. Her album, which was self-titled, reached number one on the Billboard Top 100, and garnered her two Grammy Awards. Mariah's journey to super-stardom had begun.
With the release of her third album, Music Box, Carey's record label gave her more control over her content. Music Box proved to be another smash for Carey, placing her on the Billboard Top 100 for 128 weeks, and bringing her two more #1 hits with "Hero" and "Dreamlover". In 1994, Mariah released her universally acclaimed Christmas album, creating a new holiday standard with "All I Want For Christmas (Is You)".
In the late 90s, Mariah's career entered a new stratosphere. She released two massive albums: Butterfly and Rainbow. Butterfly saw the release of "My All", Carey's 13th Hot 100 #1 single, making her the record holder for the most #1 singles by a female artist.
"Heartbreaker" was released on Mariah's sixth studio album, Rainbow. The track was another #1 hit for Carey, making her the only artist to have a #1 track every year of the 1990s. The video for "Heartbreaker" is one of Mariah's most memorable. The tune is catchy, but the song's narrative is light and sweet, just like Carey's trademark voice. If you needed another reason to love the single, Jay-Z is featured on the track. (Desi Hits!)
