Former Oprah guest relives his moment on stage
When Paul Robins was asked to sing "Hero" on "Oprah" in 2005, he also got to meet Mariah
Carey and Randy Jackson. He thought it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. But three
months later, he was on the show again to perform a song called "I Pray", which Carey
wrote for him.
"Even now when I look back I cannot believe that I was on 'Oprah' twice within the same
year," Robins said. It all started when his mother wrote the show and sent a tape of Paul
singing. Oprah was impressed enough to send her crew and surprise Paul and his family at
their Makaha home and invited them to appear on her wildest dreams show.
"What she did for me and my family back then was so so greatly appreciated, and I couldn't
have asked for someone better to help me experience all of that, given me the opportunity
to meet so much awesome people," Robins said.
Paul's parents are just as grateful for the experience, and how well they were treated.
"Oprah just took care of us completely, the hotel the traveling, the food, clothing, which
we thought everything would be for him but everything was for us also," said Laurie Robins,
Paul's mother.
Paul's father, Roy, agreed. "Even food, we were eating the best, for all those days we
were there, we just kept eating good stuff like prime rib and lobster, and it never ended,"
Roy Robins said.
The original recording of Carey's song did earn the family some money, but the recording
deal with Sony never worked out. "Sad to say it did go on the sour side, but I'm very hopeful
as to my career in the future, and I'm just going to keep pushing for my dream," Robins said.
Just days away from graduating from Kamehameha Schools, Paul hasn't stopped singing. He
plans to record a CD with a local company.
