An Amsterdam retreat good enough even for Mariah
Continuing our series on the world's hippest hotels and the stars who frequent them,
Sarah Turner checks out The Dylan in Amsterdam.
A building that has had more image changes than Lady Gaga. In the 18th century, when it
was Amsterdam's first theatre, the composer Vivaldi once conducted his orchestra here.
Some 100 years later, the building became an orphanage and soup kitchen run by the Catholic
Church. In 1998 the church decided to let a more luxurious form of hospitality take over.
Long, labyrinthine corridors hint at austerity, but lead into a series of minimally
luxurious rooms, seemingly designed to cover all the design requests of picky celebrities.
The hotel is named after the Welsh writer Dylan Thomas and there is also a suite in his
honour which dispenses with a minibar in favour of a fully stocked drinks cabinet.
Feel more zennish? There seems to be an infinite variety of minimalist rooms to choose from,
and a painter is kept on staff to ensure all the white paint stays bright. Mariah Carey
stayed in No 32, a suite large enough for her famously vast collection of luggage.
Set in the Notting Hill of Amsterdam, The Dylan overlooks the Keizersgracht canal, a typically
Dutch vista of water sandwiched by 18th century houses and cobbled streets. The hotel has its
own boat; Mariah Carey took a private cruise. Compared to Mariah Carey, Annie Lennox's stay
was low-key - she was spotted in the bar; it's a popular post-concert hangout for musicians.
