Best and worst baby name lists

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have made two prominent 2011 lists. Each of their twins appears on a list of baby names for 2011 - one of them on the list of best names, and the other on the list of the worst. According to a report from Yahoo!, lists of both the best and worst celebrity baby names of 2011 have surfaced and yes - it's absolutely true - Mariah and Nick have a child on each of these lists.

It's definitely worth mentioning that in Sweden it's against the law to name one's child a bizarre or nonsensical name. However, here in the U.S. there are no such laws, and people - namely celebrities - have a penchant for branding their babies with peculiar monikers.

In 1922 a book was published called How To Name Your Baby Without Handicapping It For Life, and today's parents (read: celebrity parents) could learn a thing or two by reading it. In the book it says that a child's name should be worthy. It suggests that the name have a decent meaning. It should be somewhat original. It should indicate the sex of the child. Easy pronounciation is a must. And it should fit the family (last) name.

Here are a few celebrities who brilliantly adhered to these rules, and made the list of Best Celebrity Baby Names of 2011. Mariska Hargitay named her daughter Alaya. Zac Brown from the Zac Brown Band welcomed little Joni into the world. Tina Fey gave birth to Penelope Athena. Singer Pink named her and Corey Hart's daughter Willow Sage. And Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon named one half of their set of twins Monroe.

Then there are those other names - the ones that made the list of Worst Celebrity Baby Names of 2011 - and Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon sadly find themselves on that list, too, for their son Moroccan Scott. They are in good company, too. Mike Myers named his little boy Spike. (Even Moroccan is better than Spike!) Alicia Silverstone stuck her son with the label of Bear Blu. And Jennie Finch dubbed her son Diesel.

All people - not just celebrities - should heed the advice in the tried but true aforementioned baby naming book. Children will carry these names with them for a lifetime. Can you imagine being a 52-year-old man named Bear Blu? Or how about a 30-year-old professional woman named Mirabella Bunny. That's what Bryan Adams's daughter is named!

Think! Give a child a chance. In this world of horrible bullying, why give a child one more reason to be taunted? For the record, Moroccan isn't all that bad a name. It's unusual, but it definitely beats Bear Blue. And at least Mariah and Nick get kudos for naming Monroe!

What's the worst celebrity baby name you can think of?
