Mariah Carey, Kravitz, celebs react to Don Cornelius death

Don Cornelius
Following the shocking death of Soul Train creator and host Don Cornelius, a number of celebrities have taken to social media to mourn. Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Amber Riley, and R&B/soul singer Keyshia Cole were among those sharing memories of Soul Train and Cornelius Wednesday.

"R.I.P. Mr. Don Cornelius. His historic contribution to our lives will never be forgotten," Mariah Carey wrote via Twitter. Echoing Carey, Lenny Kravitz went on to express gratitude for what Cornelius did via Soul Train. "Brother Don Cornelius. You made being black beautiful. May you rest in peace, love and soul. Lenny," said Kravitz.

Launched in 1971, Cornelius' "Soul Train" remained on television for 37 seasons, including "Best Of" editions. That success was not lost on former Making The Band and Danity Kane star Aubrey O'Day. "RIP Don Cornelius. Soul Train paved the way for shows like Making The Band, his legacy lives through all the talent those shows expose," said O'Day.

Not only did Cornelius launch Soul Train, he also worked to create the Soul Train Music Awards which recognized recording artists including Keyshia Cole. "Sorry to hear Don Cornelius has passed. My first and second ever TV performances were Soul Train and Soul Train Awards," Cole said Wednesday. "Thank you. God bless you."

While his contributions were great, there are still many questions related to his untimely death, especially in light of reports that it was an "apparent suicide". "RIP Don Cornelius. I used to see him at the grocery store all the time. How sad," said Amber Riley. "Rumors of suicide too, man."

Cornelius was 75. He is survived by two sons.
