Mariah Carey attempts to salvage "Triumphant"

At this point it is impossible to see "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" as anything but a significant disappointment as the lead single for Mariah Carey's upcoming 14th studio album. She is one of the top pop stars of all time, and, in the original single mix, she is reduced to sounding like a featured artist on her own record. The new music video directed by Mariah Carey's husband Nick Cannon seems to add to the perception as the clip seems to be primarily about guest rapper Meek Mill who portrays a boxer. We see a significant amount of Mariah Carey cavorting and singing in the boxing ring, and the entire music video is bathed in a gold tint. However, it seems that the focus in a boxing match is usually on the boxers... not on the girl in the ring between rounds.

Calling "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" a commercial disappointment would be a significant understatement. So far the song has missed the Billboard Hot 100 entirely and just barely edged onto the R&B chart at #97. The primary criticism of the song has been that we don't hear enough of the star. When one of the world's top pop stars releases a song called "Triumphant", we expect the star to sound "triumphant". This single and music video bring to mind something more appropriately titled "Afterthought".
