Mariah Carey to receive walking papers from EMI?

The glitter of Mariah Carey's multi-million dollar contract with Virgin Records did not sparkle for long. EMI Plc, the record company conglomerate that owns Virgin Records, is reportedly offering Carey a large lump-sum payment to leave the label, according to the The Los Angeles Times. The news comes just three months after Carey's initial Virgin release, Glitter, flopped by the singer's standards. The album has sold only 2 million copies worldwide at press time and has left EMI with a reported $10 million loss.

After a phenomenal 10-year career on Sony Music's Columbia imprint, Carey signed with Virgin Records in April (allstar, April 3) for a figure reportedly somewhere between $80-$118 million over four albums. The deal, however, was surely the highlight of the singer's year. On top of the mediocre success of Glitter and the miserable showing of her film of the same name, Carey also had a "complete emotional and physical breakdown" in August and was hospitalized for two weeks.

Representatives for Carey at Virgin and PMK Public Relations were unavailable for comment at press time. Since her debut in 1990, Carey has gone on to become the most successful female artist of all time. Her credits include over 140 million album and singles sales worldwide and 85 RIAA gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications; and 15 No. 1 singles.
