Mariah sings Hero at Macy's 4th of July firework display

Mariah Carey has performed her signature ballad "Hero" at the annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. Carey's performance was broadcast live on NBC as part of the network's Independence Day celebrations. Introduced by her husband Nick Cannon, Carey gave a short speech before her performance.

"We come together in good times and bad," she observed. "Hurricane Sandy, the tornado in Oklahoma and the bombings in Boston have all tested us recently, but we continue to open our hearts and help in extraordinary ways. As President Obama said earlier, today is a day to recognise what makes us proud to be Americans. This next song is a tribute to all the heroes who make us so proud."

Carey stepped down as a judge on American Idol earlier this year to prepare for the release of her new album, The Art of Letting Go.
