Mariah Carey little known facts

How many little known facts do most people know about Miss diva, Mariah Carey? Perhaps most notably Mariah is known as one of the judges on American Idol, she worked with Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson and Keith Urban. If not that then maybe it was her marriage to Nick Cannon that stands out most. Another bit of popular information is that Mariah is the third best selling female artist, period. She has sold approximately 160 million albums worldwide. One fact that many may not know is that she has had more number one hit singles than Elvis Presley. The Beatles are the only artists ahead of her in that category. She has been singing since an early age. Mariah's mother was a voice coach. One day Carey shocked her mother by imitating her singing opera, she was two years old. It is widely known her vocal range spans more than five octaves. Her first voice lesson began when she was four.

Mariah Carey's little known facts:

- Her name is from They Call The Wind Mariah from the musical Paint Your Wagon.

- Her fans call her Lambily.

- Carey studied cosmetology in another life.

- Mariah had a role in the film The Butler.

- DemBabies is her children's website.

- Mariah recorded the longest running number one song in history with Boys II Men called One Sweet Day.

- Marilyn Monroe's white baby grand piano became hers for $662,500.

- Mirage was her high school nickname because she cut class so often.

- Patti Labelle is her godmother.

- Her legs are insured for a billon dollars.

- Her song Obsessed is directed at Eminem.

Stars are meant to shine, their presence is meant to immediately uplift whoever is around. Mariah comes across to the public as someone who truly wants others to be happy. Sincerity is recognizable and Carey does not hide hers. Maybe this is what shined through when, at 18, her tape landed in the hands of Tommy Mottola, who at that time was president of Columbia Records. That is not to say her voice didn't close the deal; even a great voice needs personality at times to be heard. She was signed right away and her first album had four number one singles on it, one of which was Vision of Love. Tommy and Mariah were married to each other for five years. In '92 Mariah was on MTV's Unplugged and her rendition of the Jackson's I'll Be There became another number one hit single. Also a writer, her Butterfly album contained 11 of her original compositions. In '98 she sang a duet with fellow diva Whitney Houston entitled When You Believe from The Prince of Egypt soundtrack. In 2001 Mariah had issues with exhaustion due to her hectic schedule and she experienced a short period of hospitalization.

Then there is of course the controversy of making bad choices when it comes to performing. Only Mariah can answer why such incidents happen. It could be bad judgment or a case of being nonjudgmental. Lastly, there is that one on going special little known Mariah Carey fact, she fundraises for the Fresh Air Fund.
