5 things you didn't know about Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is celebrating her birthday today, so join in by discovering more about the singer, from the origin of her name and her early singing start to her famous Godmother.

1. Mariah was named after a song

It seems Mariah was always destined to be involved with music, as it was music that inspired her name. She was named after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah" from the musical "Paint Your Wagon".

2. Mariah was singing opera as a toddler

While most toddlers are singing "Baa Baa Black Sheep" at most, Mariah was pretty advanced already. Her mother, Patricia, was a mezzo-soprano with the New York City Opera and Mariah soon picked up the notes from her mum. Patricia has recounted how a two-year-old Mariah overheard her rehearsing Verdi's "Rigoletto" and joined in: "I missed my cue, but Mariah didn't. She sang it - in Italian - at exactly the right point." Respect.

3. Mariah has a famous Godmother

Continuing the music theme of Mariah's entire life, the singer has a famous Godmother who is also in the business; the Grammy Award-winning Patti LaBelle. Patti revealed just how amazing it is to be Mariah's Godmum when she appeared on "The Wendy Williams Show". They regularly party together in the Bahamas and her Goddaughter often sends her bottles of Cristal champagne and 100 to 200 white flowers, saying: "It's just beautiful". I'll say.

4. Mariah studied cosmetology

It wasn't all music for a teen Mariah, however, as she also had to earn money to support her singing dreams after she graduated from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York in 1987. She moved to Manhattan and did various jobs, including working as a waitress and a coat check girl, and also spent some time studying cosmetology on the side while she wrote songs at night. If you're wondering what cosmetology is, it's not anything to do with space (as I excitedly thought; Mariah was training to be an astronaut!) it's actually the study of beauty treatments.

5. Mariah insured her legs

And for an eye-watering figure, if reports are to be believed. When she was chosen to front Gillette's Legs Of A Goddess campaign in 2006, the singer insured her legs for a cool $1billion. Wow. Zers. At the press conference to launch the campaign at New York's Radio City Music Hall, a 16-foot tall model of Mariah's pins was unveiled. When Rihanna was given Gilette's Venus Breeze Celebrity Legs of a Goddess Award in 2007, she insured her pins for $1million, which sounded crazy enough until I heard about Mariah's $1billion.
