Weblogs of the stars

Hollywood personalities share their innermost thoughts, interesting or not, on the Internet. While Anna Nicole Smith was out buying clothes and Ozzy was figuring out how to work the remote control, Wil Wheaton's whole world turned upside down. Smith and the Osbournes may get big ratings and big money for their TV shows, but there's more compelling drama online. Hollywood stars big and small are writing Weblogs - Internet diaries that detail their daily lives. Many celebrity Web sites, including those of actor Jeff Bridges and Kiss front man Gene Simmons, look as if they were set up to promote new projects.

Other celebrities such as William Shatner and Al Roker are more active on their Weblogs but rarely get very personal. But some of the sites seem to thrive on controversy and end up making mainstream news. Perhaps most famously, singer Mariah Carey left rambling messages on her Weblog during a July 2001 meltdown. "What I'd like to do is just take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video," Carey said on www.mariahcarey.com a few days before she was hospitalized for an emotional breakdown. "I don't say this much but guess what, I don't take care of myself."
