Morning show wars: Carey defects
Mariah Carey - whose new album "Rainbow" is to reach stores on Tuesday - is taking her act on the road. OK, just a few blocks. CBS' "The Early Show" booked the pop singer for its debut on Monday. But she backed out on short notice because her people were worried the network wouldn't get a city permit in time. The concert was scheduled to take place outside CBS' new ground-level studio on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue.
Carey's publicist, Jennifer Glaisek of the powerful agency PMK, had given CBS until 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to secure a permit. The city issued the permit shortly thereafter. Too late. Carey had agreed to do NBC's "Today" show within an hour after the deadline.
No worries, says Steve Friedman, "The Early Show" senior executive producer. "We're not going to air color bars on Monday." (CNN)
