Mariah opens her home to MTV
Mariah Carey has opened up her Manhattan, New York, apartment to a TV crew from MTV - but put
certain objects and rooms out of bounds. The pop superstar, appearing on the first show in a
new series of in-style show MTV Cribs, spent hours showing a film crew around her dream apartment
for the 30-minute special.
Wearing a variety of outfits - from lingerie to evening dresses - the singer showed off her
favourite rooms and possessions but refused to let the film crew film enter her bedroom or take
shots of her piano, once owned by Marilyn Monroe. She explains, "I'm very protective of my piano.
I'd like to show it to you guys but I can't. I'm not going to show my bedroom. I fear if I show
that, what's left for me?"
Carey admits she's thrilled with her two-floor home, which offers breathtaking views of New York
and the Empire State Building. She adds, "It's an art-deco apartment. When I grew up, I didn't
belong in a house that belonged in Architectural Digest, trust me. When I was little I always
wanted a penthouse apartment with a view."
The copy of Architectural Digest which features her home is leather bound on her coffee table -
alongside a book of fans' letters and photographs. She says, "This helped me out at a time when
I wasn't feeling quite so very happy. The originality of my fans is unparalleled. They make me
happy."
The hairiest moment of the shoot at home came when one of her dogs, Jack, playfully attacked
her cat Willie.
