Mariah Carey slams American Idol

Mariah Carey has slammed American Idol calling it "fake" and hinting that judges had to fabricate feedback to heighten the "boring" show's entertainment value. The American Grammy-winner has made no secret of her disdain for her time on the reality show in the past - previously comparing the experience to "hell" - and she continued in the same vein on Thursday.

In an interview with Australian KIIS FM hosts Kyle and Jackie O, the 45-year-old gave a disparaging review of the recently cancelled Fox show, saying, "It's so boring and so fake." Elaborating, she alluded that judges are coerced into giving exaggerated feedback to amp up the show's performance value and snare more ratings.

"I'm sorry I just think it's... When I say it's fake, I mean like you have to make up things to say about people. Half the time the performances are good, you just be like 'it was good' and you feel like ending it there: 'You were really good'," she said before trailing off.

The outspoken star, who featured on season 12 of the show alongside Randy Jackson, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, said she wouldn't consider returning for a possible reunion finale show. "Hell, no! Absolutely not, that was the worst experience of my life," she said emphatically.

"I'm not going to get into what it was, let's just say, I don't think they had any intentions of us having a good experience through that show. Pitting two females against each other wasn't cool," she said referring to her reported-to-be contentious relationship with Minaj.

"It should have been about the contestants instead of about some non-existent feud that turned into even more ridiculousness and I would never want to be involved in it again, but everyone else can like it." Mariah's comments were echoed by former American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe who blamed the show's demise on Nicki and Mariah's relationship in an interview with Billboard.

Mariah and Nicki joined the show in 2012 for season 12 (which aired at the beginning of 2013), and rumors of their falling out quickly overshadowed any of the talented contestants. Before the show premiered in January 2013, a video was leaked to TMZ that showed Mariah and Nicki at loggerheads.

Meanwhile, Nicki added fuel to the fire by taking to Twitter to launch a furious tirade against Mariah in May 2013, following the Butterfly singer's on-show dig about having more Billboard number ones. "Bwaha! Burn? She's sad I tied her record for Hot 100 entries in only 3 years of being in the game. Yep, a black female rapper. What you should be doing (wit your messy ass) is asking why a woman so successful at her age, is still so insecure, and bitter," she added.

Nicki then addressed the rumours that Idol producers were considering replacing Mariah with Jennifer Lopez after allegedly being unhappy with her "bland" critiquing. "All dem #1s but JLo phone ringin? Lol. I guess having a personality, being a secure woman, and giving genuine critique still trumps that," wrote Nicki. The pair later went on to be replaced by Jennifer and Harry Connick Jr.

News of American Idol's cancellation was announced by the network in May, after it was revealed that the show will go off the air after its 15th and final season next spring. The cast from the past few seasons, with Ryan Seacrest as host and Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. as judges, will return for a season-long celebration of the show's history.

Meanwhile, Mariah is currently promoting her new single Infinity and album To Infinity.
