City of CT denies receiving request from Mariah

No purple lights will adorn Table Mountain tonight. The City of Cape Town says that no requests were received for the lights on Table Mountain to be turned on tonight, as part of superstar Mariah Carey's Cape Town performance.

The We Belong Together hit-maker is in the country for her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour. The rumour mill has been working overtime, with some publications claiming that the diva demanded the lights be turned on in a purple colour as a tribute to prince, who died last week.

However, the City of Cape Town says it would be highly unlikely that even a last minute application would be approved, given the lengthy approval process. Spokesperson for the City Of Cape Town, Priya Reddy, said, "The electricity department within the City of Cape Town hasn't received any application at this stage. What normally happens is that a technical assessment has to take place by the electricity department. The application to light Table Mountain will have to come through and will have to be approved by the City's mayoral member for that department."

Reddy said in some rare cases, the executive mayor would have to approve the application. "Sometimes it will also have to be approved by the mayor's office but this time no application has been received by the electricity department, and so the approval process hasn't begun yet."
