Carey fan up close on stage

It was one sweet day for Durban's Antonio Gabriel Nobin when he got to meet his idol, Mariah Carey up close and danced before an audience of thousands. Nobin, a financial grants manager from Isipingo, had been in the crowd at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday for Carey's Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour performance, when two men with American accents walked up to him and told him he could join the star on stage. "Who could say no," he said.

The 43-year-old said he had bought his R850 ticket within the first hour of the online box office opening. He believes his gyrating and lively dance movements while waiting for the concert to begin caught the producer's eye. His glittering T-shirt with pictures of Carey on the back and front may have also brought him "luck". He said he designed the shirt himself.

"The men told me Mariah Carey thinks I am a super fan and she would like to reward me. When I got to the stage I asked them if I must sing. They said, 'No, be loose and enjoy.'" In a one-and-a-half minute video clip, recorded by a friend of Nobin's, Carey can be seen to the left of the stage singing Touch my Body.

Nobin comes on to the stage dancing with two of Carey's dancers beside him. He is then ushered, blindfolded, towards her and on to a chair. While still blindfolded, Carey asks him his name. Nobin keeps moving his shoulders and hands as the men dance around him. Mariah then walks towards him while they unmask him. She holds his hand and touches her picture on his T-shirt.

He then stands up holding his hands together, dances a little before being escorted off the stage, with Carey waving him goodbye. "She told me to enjoy the moment 'darling'. She touched the t-shirt and said 'sparkling'. She is very beautiful. Her hands felt like a marble top or porcelain. I still can't believe that I met her. I will treasure the moment forever," Nobin said.

"I know every song of Carey's but I must admit Whitney Houston is my number one. I also play tennis, and one day hope to meet Roger Federer. I love poetry and I have an unpublished manuscript," he said.
