Mariah's ex-manager moves closer to filing lawsuit

Mariah Carey's ex-manager inched closer to her megabucks lawsuit against the singer Monday - but the pop diva's camp questioned the validity of a summons left with Carey's Tribeca doorman. In new paperwork filed Monday, estranged manager Stella Stolper said her side successfully served Carey late Friday with paperwork left in the lobby below the singer's posh penthouse.

The summons, originally filed April 13, is meant to alert Carey that Stolper plans to file a lawsuit alleging breach of contract, unjust enrichment and violations of both the U.S. Civil Rights Act and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.

A source close to Carey scoffed at the validity of the legal maneuver. "We have no idea if the doorman at Mariah's building was given a legal letter," the source told the Daily News. "Ordinarily one doesn't serve someone via their doorman."

In the Monday filing, Stolper's process server said he previously tried to serve Carey at her building on August 3 and August 4 but was turned away with the claim the singer was not at home. He said he returned twice on Friday and finally left the paperwork after speaking with a doorman he identified by name and physical description.

"I wasn't given permission to go up the apartment door to post the papers. As such I left the documents in the lobby of the building, the point at which my progress was arrested," the process server said in the filing obtained by The News. The summons was originally filed April 13 in Manhattan Supreme Court and is considered the type of legal salvo plaintiffs fire to jumpstart settlement negotiations.

Stolper, who worked with Carey for about five years and produced and appeared in her docuseries "Mariah's World", said she wants "money damages in an amount to be proved at trial, plus interest and costs". According to TheBlast.com, a source close to Stolper said the lawsuit would seek damages north of $100 million.

"Stella Bulochnikov was terminated from employment as Mariah's manager due to failure to perform her job effectively and ill-serving her client," Carey's camp said in a statement released in April. "Stella was not under contract for employment," the statement read. "She has been spreading false rumors to any media outlet that will publish them. We won't respond to lies and threats."

Stolper, also known as Stella Bulochnikov, was close to Carey through several personal and business dramas, including Carey's ill-fated New Year's Eve performance in Times Square on December 31, 2016. In November 2017, Carey, whose hits include "We Belong Together", decided she wasn't a fit with Stolper.

In a joint statement, the pair announced it was "in their mutual best interest to part ways on day-to-day management". "Mariah Carey and Stella Bulochnikov remain partners in a number of business ventures, and will continue to support each other in those endeavors," the statement said.
