James Packer became "toxic" after split from Mariah

James Packer has revealed he became "toxic" after his very public and less-than-amicable split from pop diva Mariah Carey. The casino mogul was dealing with the fallout of Crown Resorts company staff being jailed in China, was caught up in a corruption investigation, before the split from his then fiancee eventually culminated in his third nervous breakdown.

"By the time the Israel so-called Case 1000 had become public, the China arrests and Crown's sale of Macau had occurred and the breakup with Mariah had happened, I had become toxic," Mr Packer revealed in a new biography The Price Of Fortune: The Untold Story Of Being James Packer, in an excerpt published by The Daily Telegraph.

Opening up about the pair's failed relationship, he also denied reports that he was responsible for leaking settlement details, which eventually saw Mariah demand a $70m payout after they ended their engagement. "I had absolutely nothing to do with the story," Packer said.

The unlikely couple first made their romance official when they were seen holidaying on his super yacht in the south of Italy back in 2015, and less than a year later he had proposed with a diamond ring reportedly worth $10 million. Packer had been engaged three times before; to his first and second wives Jodhi Meares and Erica Packer, and to former model Kate Fischer, who is now known as Tziporah Malkah.

Back in October James Packer spoke about Mariah Carey for the first time since calling off the engagement, confessing their relationship was "a mistake". The Aussie casino mogul said he began dating the songstress during a low point in his life when he was in over $5 billion of debt and looking for ways to embed himself in the US, where his ex-wife Erica and three kids live.

"I was at a low point in my personal life," Packer, 50, told the Weekend Australian. "She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. She is very bright. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me."

After the split Mariah Carey sold the 35-carat diamond engagement ring given to her by Packer, despite spending some time still wearing it in public after they separated. The pair were engaged in a financial settlement which saw the singer keep the massive, sparkly rock.

"Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity," her publicist told Page Six at the time. "That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend." According to several reports, the ring, which was reportedly worth approximately US $10 million (AUD $13 million), only sold for US $2.1 million (AUD $2.7 million).
