Marie Curie was an amazing person, becoming the first woman ever to win a Nobel prize for her research into radioactivity. She discovered radium and polonium, and made a huge contribution to the fight against cancer. So we can see where the mistake came from - why wouldn't you want to commemorate her work with a fancy birthday cake?
Unfortunately, that isn't what one woman had in mind when she asked for a cake themed with Mariah Carey. Author Harriet Lye posted on Twitter: "My cousin in England told her colleagues she wanted a Mariah Carey birthday cake. They misunderstood, and is the cake they made her instead. It's Marie Curie, looking very festive."
We love the new cake, but Marie does look a little less excited than the "When You Believe" singer. People are loving the mix-up on Twitter. Sara O'Leary wrote: "This is the best! It's even better than the time the bakery woman asked my son what he wanted written on his cake and he replied 'down with Capitalism'."
Someone else replied: "Frankly I don't think they misheard her at all. This is so much better than Mariah Carey." Others joked they would be hesitant to eat the cake due to its potential radioactivity. Another pointed out that at least the baker got the most important detail correct: "Look, they spelled her name correctly, and as someone who's middle name is Siobhan I can attest to the number of times people have effed it up. This is amazing."
