Pals seek to nix Mariah fight rumor

While troubled singer Mariah Carey was said to be improving yesterday, colleagues and friends sought to defend and protect her. "My heart goes out to her, and I am praying for her speedy recovery," said actress Mira Sorvino, who recently filmed "Wisegirls" with Carey.

The pop singer has been secluded in a private psychiatric hospital in Connecticut since suffering an emotional and physical breakdown July 25. Her only visitors have been immediate family and her manager, Louise McNally.

Tales of Carey's meltdown from work and personal pressure have been widely reported. But Sorvino denied one of them: that the two of them had an on-set wrestling match. "No physical fight ever occurred between us, and the idea is as insulting as it is laughable," Sorvino said in a statement. "We finished the film dancing at an impromptu wrap party in high spirits and exchanged gifts and warmest goodbyes," Sorvino said.

"Wisegirls" producer Billy Blake also distanced himself from reports the two actresses had tangled. "I do not have firsthand information of any altercation between Mariah Carey and Mira Sorvino, as I was not on the set that day," Blake said in a statement. Cindi Berger, Carey's spokeswoman, has denied that an altercation took place. Sorvino called the singer "talented and hardworking."

"[She] flew in and out on weekends, faithfully fulfilling her numerous obligations in both the film and music industry," Sorvino added. For now, Carey remains in the hospital's bucolic setting. "She is improving daily," Berger said. "Now's the time I think everyone should reach out to her, embrace her and give her the privacy she needs."
