Breakdown has cost Carey some "Glitter"
With the release of Mariah Carey's "Glitter" feature next week, the tide of industry sentiment
seems to be shifting away from her. Music industry executives, managers and top public relations
guns we talked to show a far more negative outlook now than was evident following her initial
breakdown in late July.
The original consensus was that she could bounce back. In fact, we were taken aback at how fast
some expected her return. One exec told us that with "all the great antidepressants around now,
they should have her up and running in a few weeks." But now, as one key insider puts it, "She
might get a sympathy vote, but this is a business, and everyone wants to back a winner; she no
longer looks like a winner."
Adding to such sentiments is the widely held view that part of Carey's breakdown is attributable
to "her reaction to her first big disappointment", says another music business veteran in reference
to her song "Loverboy". "She'd been on an incredible roll, but then the single didn't do well,
there was bad buzz on the movie."
Several felt that long-held bitterness toward Carey could be adding to the growing chill. "There's
a lot of resentment toward Mariah in the industry," noted one, adding, in reference to Carey's
ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, "Here is an artist who made it big with very scant touring; there's
a feeling she got a bit of a free pass because her husband was the head of a record company."
