Free and sexy Mariah is going for a movie career
In the past she was controlled by powerful men, today the souldiva is free. Free to dress challenging, free to do her music. And above all, free to go for the thing Madonna, Whitney Houston and Cher already have - a movie career. It's almost a rule these days. The big popsingers all wants to be in Hollywood. With an increadible 90 million sold albums and 14 #1 songs on the american singles chart, it's exactly that kind of career Mariah is looking for. Next christmas her movie "All That Glitters" premiers. The filming starts in February.
"I want to do movies, lots of movies, because I love to act. It has helped me to become a free person", Mariah says. We are sitting in the limo on our way out to Arlanda airport. Mariah sips a glas of white wine, exhausted after the quick visit in Stockholm. Her own Rainbow-party at Cafe Opera and a day full of interviews has left its marks.
"But the party was increadibly fun. All my friends where there and I drank lots of Apple Martini", she says and smiles at her Swedish friend Josefine who is following her to London for a couple of days. With the best friend beside her in the limo Mariah seems like just any 29-year old girl. Maybe with a bit better makeup. The advertising machine for the album Rainbow is going full steam. Trips all over the world. But after new year the movie is all that matters. Mariah has been co-writting the story to "All That Glitters". It's in the 80ties, her character is poor, grows up without parents, starts a girlband, meets a DJ, makes a breakthrough, fights with the backside of fame. Parallels can definitly be drawn to Mariah Carey's own life and the marriage to Sony boss Tommy Motolla. But she denies that.
"No, I was close to my mom and I was only a child in the beginning of the 80ties. The movie is not autobiographial", Mariah says firmly. Even so, the movie has helped the star to find her true self. "Theater has worked as therapy for me. I used to be blocket, everthing was a complete mess in my life but now I've learned to understand my emotions." SEXIER
That freedom and being yourself thing is something Mariah keeps coming back to. "For many years I did what the older, powerful men told me to. It suffocated and inhibitated me."
So free. So why does the singer on the top of her career starts to get undress? "Because that's me. That's my way of expressing myself visually. That's how I used to look in high school." Josefine nods to confirm it. She appeared in Mariah Careys life when they were 17, as girlfriend to Mariah's brother.
"People used to complain that I was boring, now all of a sudden I'm too sexy. But I can do what I want because in the end it's my voice that counts", the singer says. Mariah Carey talks about inner beauty, that everyone is good enough. She talks about todays society that makes young girls starving themself, feel less worth than they really are. But she don't think that also she is part of the blame for that. Despite that she is the teenage idol that more and more let her body be in focus on album covers and in music videos. DIVORCE
"Maybe I'm contributing to the fixation of looks, but I don't hope so. Uptil two years ago I hid my face and my body. But now I'm not ashamed anymore and that's positive."
The turning point came with the divorce from Mottola. And the new love. Last christmas Mariah Carey met latinostar Luis Miguel at a skiing vacation in Aspen. Since then they are a couple.
"I am greatful for our love. He is wonderful, a true gentleman." The limo drives up to the private jetplane. "Hej då, tack så mycket", Mariah says in Swedish. "I'll be back to do a concert as soon as I've made my movie. (Aftonbladet)
