Janet fuming at Mariah's album deal

Janet Jackson is reportedly furious at the size of a new recording deal for Mariah Carey. The jealousy was sparked by the £20 million-an-album deal Carey struck with Virgin records - which is also home to Jackson. Jackson is being paid a comparatively modest £7m for her albums.

"Janet considered herself the reigning diva at Virgin before they signed Mariah and now she's worried the label will spend more time and effort promoting Mariah's album than hers," a source told the New York Post newspaper. "She has been kicking up a big fuss. Mariah is number one at Virgin now."

Jackson's new album, All For You, is due out in America on Tuesday, while Carey's new offering, All That Glitters, is set for release in July or August. The source added: "Janet wants to make sure the album is not shunted in any way."

But the rivalry was denied by Jackson's spokesman Paul Freundlich. "This is absolutely the silliest thing I have ever heard," he told the newspaper. "Janet has the number one single and is poised for one of the biggest albums of the year. She certainly has no animosity."

A Virgin spokesman backed Jackson's agent and said: "People have been asking Janet about this, but she doesn't have a problem at all."
