Joan and Melissa Rivers

Joan and Melissa Rivers, the infamous mother-daughter duo, discuss spilling blood on the red carpet. Newsweek's Jane Spencer talked with the duo about how they make their fashion calls, where they draw the line - and that whole Mariah Carey thing.

Jane: Does that happen often, that something you say gets inflated or distorted by the press?

Joan: That’s the way i'’s done. It’s the old children’s game of telephone. You know, you say...

Melissa: I remember one year my mom said to Mariah Carey, you're not heavy, you look gorgeous.

Joan: Everyone was saying she was fat, so I said, "They told me you were fat and you're not. You look gorgeous."

Melissa: And of course what ended up in the papers was Joan Rivers tells Mariah Carey she's fat. We went to the tapes and she said, "you are not fat". But by the time the paper hit someone’s desk, it had changed entirely.

Joan: But that's OK. More people tune into the show. People want to see a lot of that put down-y stuff. Unfortunately, it's a bad part of human nature. But it's helped us get these amazing numbers.

Many thanks to Candice from Mariah's Diary.
