Eric Benét and music legend Mariah Carey key in to Glitter
In Magnum Force, the first line of Dirty Harry sequels, Clint Eastwood growls, "a man's got to
know his limitation." Silver screen newcomer, soul singer Eric Benét, is obviously not in tune
with the Eastwood oeuvre, otherwise he may not have stepped in front of the camera - and the
microphone - for Glitter opposite another big-screen debut artist Mariah Carey.
"I had never met Mariah when she called me on my cell phone and asked me to do the picture. I
think I was too stunned and exited to realize what I had gotten myself into," explained Benét
during a break from mixing his next album, due to hit shelves later this summer. It's hard not
to like Benét the musician, known for crafting sultry jazz flavored classic R&B songs - or Benét
the actor, as he provides an unplugged take of the film's premise. "Think a pop, slightly hip
hop version of A Star Is Born and you get the idea."
Though Benét does a duet with Carey and has "some pretty sexy scenes" he insists his part doesn't
call for him to have to explain the sexual nature of his on-screen romance to his wife, actress
Halle Berry. "Halle gave me some very valid acting tips, one of which was to take time and figure
out the beats in my dialogue like I would in a song," says Benét. "She also said not to do anything
unless in felt natural to the character."
There were moments, though, according to Benét, when the would-be movie star's day job experience
paid dividends. Prior to doing their first love scene, Carey took Benét aside and they acted out
their movements the way she would in a video. "She would ask if I'd feel comfortable holding her
this way and how would I react if she moved this way. I later realized what she was doing was
thinking ahead to camera angles and basically coming up with some kind of choreography that would
work for us. I just hope I'm half as natural on camera as she is."
Though Glitter was a positive experience, Benét isn't quite ready to go take-for-take with his
wife. "You think that's the best thing for newlyweds to do to make a marriage work in Hollywood?
Maybe in the distant future, after I show I'm a real actor by playing a Celtic priest or a serial
killer. Right now I can't wait to go back out touring. Believe me, it's easier to be a musician
on stage than to play one."
