Love split puts Mariah in clinic
Mariah Carey is heartbroken after splitting up with her long-term lover Luis Miguel - and that is why she is really in hospital. The star, who her aides said had checked in to a New York clinic suffering from "extreme exhaustion", has been left devastated by the break-up. Mariah has been dating Luis for almost three years. They met on a skiing holiday in Aspen, Colorado.
But she is the world's biggest selling female artist of the last decade, with a £20 million-an-album record deal, and her hectic schedule has meant the couple have not had time to see each other for months. When I met Mariah last week, during her European promotional tour, she evaded all of my questions about Luis.
Friends tell me they have now definitely split and this is one cause of her present illness. One pal said: "They have both taken it really hard but Mariah's career has to come first. She has an amazingly busy schedule and she just can't fit work and a relationship in. It has all got a bit much for her and that is why she has checked into hospital in New York. Luis is also totally distraught at the break-up and is trying to get over it in LA."
The split comes just three months after Luis - a major singing star in South America - spent £1 million buying Mariah the dazzling diamond bracelet Julia Roberts wore to the Oscars.
Days before she went into hospital Mariah sent a series of strange messages to her official website. One of them said: "I just can't trust anybody any more right now because I don't understand what's going on. And I don't know if that makes any sense to anybody. I'm gonna be taking some time off."
