Mariah Carey confers with the artist for "All That Glitters"

Mariah Carey spoke to reporters in Cannes, France, over the weekend (Jan. 23 and 24) at Midem 2000, the world's leading international music-industry event. The singer will embark on her first world concert tour in eight years on Valentine's Day, and she spoke to reporters about, among other things, the premise of the film All That Glitters and a brief meeting that she had with the Artist formerly known as Prince. Carey revealed that she recently visited Minneapolis and met with the Artist and super producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to discuss the soundtrack for her upcoming film, All That Glitters.

"I was working with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis again," Carey said. "I'm going to be singing six songs in the soundtrack. My character is in a girls group. She's not the lead singer, and I actually also spent a brief few minutes with the Artist formerly known as Prince discussing the soundtrack, and he was giving me some possible things to work on and to write to. I've been a fan of his forever and it was a great experience."

The Artist knows a thing or two about musical movies. For the semi-autobiographical film Purple Rain (released in June 1984), Prince received two Grammy Awards as well as an Oscar for the film's score. The accompanying soundtrack Purple Rain spent a staggering 24 weeks on top of the Billboard album chart and spawned two No. 1 hits for Prince - "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" - as well as the hit songs "Purple Rain" and "I Would Die 4 U." To date, Purple Rain has sold more than 13 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Meanwhile, Carey says that she plans to start filming All That Glitters before the end of the year. "We haven't started filming it. It's being directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall. Kate Lanier wrote the screenplay. She also wrote the What's Love Got To Do With It's screenplay as well as Set It Off, which starred Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah and was one of my favorite movies. She's become a really good friend, and she's a really great writer, and it's a musical set in 1981."
