All that "Glitter" isn't viewing gold

It's another Mariah Carey flick, that received zero hype, that has me rethinking her potential as an actress. Mariah can act. She's just not ready to be the lead. In "Wise Girls", Mira Sorvino is Meg, a woman who is fleeing a secret tragedy when she seeks refuge in the home of her ailing grandmother. Meg slowly begins to rebuild her life, taking a job at a "family-run" Italian restaurant where she befriends fellow waitresses Raychel (Carey) and Kate (Melora Walters).

"Wise Girls" is an interesting mix of a chick flick and a fairly violent episode of "The Sopranos". What this means is we actually have a movie that will appeal to both sexes - assuming the gals can either sit through a couple of pretty bloody scenes or are willing to close their eyes. It doesn't take long for Meg to realize just what kind of family runs this restaurant - or what kind of deals are being done in the back rooms. But how far can she embrace this lifestyle? What horrible secret is she hiding? And can she flee once again if she so chooses?

We all know Sorvino can act. In "Wise Girls", she gives yet another stunning performance as a woman haunted by her past. It's Carey's acting that caught me by surprise. In "Glitter", we only get to see Carey vamping it up, wearing as little clothing as possible. Carey is a far better actress in "Wise Girls", playing the tough girl who makes some pretty risky moves as she aspires to become the restaurant manager.

Skip "Glitter". It's no surprise the video stores have dumped most of their copies already. Do your best, however, to find "Wise Girls" when it hits the rental shelves next week.
