Driving test

Most celebrities have at one time or another seen the back of Paul Monroe's head. They have seen it nod, shake and loll from one side to the other. "Sorry, sir. I forgot you were in there." But now thanks to the National Enquirer, the stars who were ferried about New York for seven years by chauffeur Paul get to see his face. And they also get to see his mouth, which is wagging up and down, desperate to tell "all".

From Stevie Wonder ("We had an SUV and a limo to transport them an all their gear"), through Mariah Carey ("two SUVs, four sedans, one Mercedes and a stretch limousine"), right up to David Letterman ("David has two cars commissioned every day"), we hear Monroe spill his guts. Fascinated by what cars the great and good were taken round in, we nonetheless find ourselves hunting for the juice. And we hear Paul tell us of the time he met Sean Connery, who "was the cheapest celebrity I can remember".

After driving Sean around New York for six or seven hours, the Scottish actor stepped from the vehicle and offered his driver a $5 tip. "You know what I did?" asks Paul. "I told him, 'No, thank you.'" Which suggests that Connery did pretty well out of that deal. And Paul did well not crash the car when Robin Williams, who has "comedy flowing out of his ears", made him laugh so hard. "Being with him... was the funniest thing in the world. He was great - and a good tipper."

Do you, like us, see something of a correlation between the size of the tip you offer Paul and the report he hands to the Enquirer about you? Of NSYNC, the boyband, Paul says: "They were nice guys", "cool" - and (guess what?) "good tippers". Of Aretha Franklin, Paul says: "Aretha is one of the sweetest people in the business." Do you think she gave Paul a good tip or a bad tip? "She was very friendly and gracious." (Want to change your mind?) And a "great tipper!". And if you want a tip from us - when in New York, take a cab.
