Proof positive

Two gals chat about life. On television. "I'm living the solution," declares one (Mariah Carey) to the other (Oprah Winfrey). Whatever. At this point in her overexposed, waning career, it's hard to believe anyone would seek life lessons from Mariah Carey, MTV striptease survivor. Coming from Mariah, a phrase like that sounds like so much New Age nonsense.

The thing is, on this one, she may be right. Her stated philosophy - live the solution - is at the heart of today's positive psychology movement. Behavioral gurus from Stephen R. Covey to Loretta LaRoche have popularized what respected doctors, like the University of Pennsylvania's Martin E.P. Seligman and Harvard psychiatrist George Valliant, have studied clinically: Taking positive action leads to happiness. Living the solution means adopting behaviors that can fix your problems or change a negative situation. Learn to be optimistic.

So go on, channel a little Mariah. Run up and down the octaves of potential solutions, leaving the off-key defeatist chatter to the days of your past.
