New artist writes a song for Mariah

Jeremy Gloff is an independent artist with twelve albums out and a fairly sizable underground following. He writes to us: "While most of my following are the indie rock, punk, and alternative kids, something happened to me two years ago that made Mariah Carey's music very very important to me. I have written a song on my new album, 'Silence is the Best Calm' for Mariah and her fans. I will be doing a huge promotion for the song, and I hope to make a slightly different audience appreciate and respect the emotional impact of our Mariah's music."

"2001 was a brutal year for me. I was about to release my 'America Is Lonely Tonight' album, and my personal life was falling apart. I had never been much of a Mariah fan. I was too "punk" for that... and anyhow Madonna was always my girl.

I began to unravel around the summertime. Suicidal thoughts were creeping in again for the first time since the 90s, and I was only getting one or two hours of sleep a night because of internet addiction. I began to post long rambling posts on my livejournal, giving the world way too much information about my problems. I was isolating friends in real life, but telling my darkest dirtiest secrets online.

Then, the quote 'Mariah Meltdown' happened. While I do believe the press sensationalized all that mess, if anything it did pique my interest in Miss Mariah Carey's music. The "Loverboy" singe had recently been released, and it became the only song I could listen to all summer. It offered me comfort, and peace.

Of course all Mariah fans know the Glitter soundtrack came out September 11th. I will never forget walking to the music store that day... seeing all the frozen scared blank faces in the cars. I bought Glitter, and went to the ice cream shop, drank a milkshake, and read the lyrics. I went home to my friends, hid in my room, and played the album. The Glitter album was my best friend through that awful, unbearable time of my life in 2001, when the world was falling apart.

I had already written a lot of songs for my Romantico album and I didn't want to write anymore. But this song would not stop coming to me. This is my message to Mariah Carey. Although we live in two totally different worlds, we had our own struggles and we both lived through them. This song is very close to my heart, and I write this song as a gift back to Mariah, for helping me get through."
