Mariah Carey the butterfly is far from shy

After filling arenas with her multiplatinum hits and glamorous stage shows, Mariah Carey says she's ready to play some intimate concerts in which she can interact more closely with fans. Carey and her soaring voice will be spotlighting her latest album, Charmbracelet, when she appears Saturday at Phoenix's Dodge Theatre. But Carey isn't just known for her voice - or her public meltdown. She's becoming increasingly infamous for her ultrashort skirts, plunging necklines and skin-baring videos.

When we first met Carey on her self-titled debut album in 1990, she was the girl next door, in plaids, pigtails and cutoffs. But that was before she married recording mogul Tommy Mottola in the mid-'90s (they later divorced). Now, in photo session after photo session, the five-octave diva routinely pushes the limits of good taste and push-up bras, from Rainbow's tank top-and-panties cover to Charmbracelet's lingerie-clad boudoir photos.

We threw a few fashion-related questions at Carey during a phone interview as she geared up for her concert tour:

You've made the short skirt a signature style. Do you have a few favorite designers that you're working with these days?

I'm working with John Galliano. I really like what he does, very much so in terms of (styles) for the stage, especially. But I'm not really a designer person. Sometimes I'll just take my own clothes, cut them up, rip them and wear them however I feel like it. That's who I am.

You've worn some very revealing styles over the years. Does that reflect a confidence in your body and yourself overall?

I guess so. To me, it's more like being a little kid and playing dress up - that's how I feel. I don't always necessarily feel like this ultraconfident person or woman. It's more about just having a good time with it.
