Fashion

In the world of awards show fashion, where everyone from snarky Joan Rivers to pajama-clad couch potatoes are quick to pounce on couture catastrophe, looking fabulous is paramount. And to do that, a slave to fashion (or her stylist) needs the element of surprise.

Trotting out the same look, or accessory, repeatedly is bound to get a celeb on somebody's worst-dressed list, and figuring out the reason for this compulsion is as difficult as getting Mariah Carey to wear a dress that fits. Los Angeles stylist Phillip Bloch has been guiding stars into flattering clothes for years, among them Halle Berry, Kim Cattrall and Salma Hayek. He leans more toward Cinderella than her frumpy stepsisters and is as perplexed as anyone by actors' goofs, such as Lara Flynn Boyle's trip down the red carpet in a pink tutu.

"There was a reason she wore that," he says. "What it was, though, only God knows." Bloch will be dressing Jim Carrey and Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, for Sunday's show. A busy man, he'll also host CNN's red carpet commentary before the ceremony on ABC. Don't expect him to sugarcoat his comments when he spies lousy choices.

"Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey keep doing the same thing over and over, and it's wrong," Bloch says. "I've been asked to work with them, but I said there's not going to be miniskirts and (breasts) flying everywhere." He didn't get those gigs, though he still dreams of putting Carey, Aguilera, 'Lil Kim, Tara Reid and Pamela Anderson, all lovers of skimpy drag, into something Grace Kelly might have worn. Then, he says, people could see how beautiful they are.
