"InStyle" checks out rock stars' first jobs
Rock stars didn't begin their lives in stretch limousines, wearing Jimmy Choos
and designer jewelry. They actually earned minimum wage and got their hands dirty
like real folk, so the July issue of InStyle, on newsstands June 25, checks out
how rock stars made their spending cash before they were stars - and has the pictures
to prove it.
Avril Lavigne was only 12 when she learned to use the Weedwacker and began cutting
her neighbors' lawns in Napanee, Ontario, Canada. "I had a good clientele of random
neighbors who had me come over once a week," she tells the magazine. "One guy paid
me $20, and it was so much at that time."
And Mariah Carey was a beauty school dropout who only lasted three hours working as
a sweeper at New York's Dramatics beauty salon. When her boss tried to nickname
her Echo, the Columbia recording artist took a hike - or rather a bus ride - home.
For his part, Nelly unloaded trucks as a member of UPS' Big Brown team, but he never
got to wear the uniform. "You don't get one of those until you've been with UPS like
nine years," claims the artist, who has two CDs, Sweat and Suit coming out this fall.
"I used to dream about being the guy who delivers the packages."
Also in the mag, Martina McBride revists her Dairy Queen days, LL Cool J hops back
on a bicycle like the one he used when he was a paperboy for the New York Post,
Liz Phair returns to the days when she sketched in charcoal, EVE does retail, and
Dave matthews heads back to the bar where he met his fellow band-members.
But without question, the dirty hands award goes to JOhn Mayer, who was the full-service
pump guy at Mobil, and declares he lost a few brain cells from the fumes, as well.
"My mission was to become the best squeegee in the land," he tells InStyle. "I have
long arms, and I thought, 'I'm going to show them art in motion: one full swipe, corner
to corner.' I never let a single drop of liquid remain."
