Inspiring Latinas

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latina.com recognizes exceptional Latinas who made their great ideas happen - and left a lasting impact on us all. Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Long Island, NY. Mariah always wanted to be a singer. She has certainly succeeded in making that idea come to fruition. Consider: Mariah's albums have sold more than 125 million copies worldwide. She's had 15 #1 singles, the most ever for a female artist (only Michael Jackson, Elvis and the Beatles have more).

Mariah's songs have spent more weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts (61 weeks) than any other artist in history (the Beatles are second, at 59 weeks). Before she became a superstar, Mariah worked as a waitress to make ends meet, and she even worked as a hair sweeper in a beauty salon. But through perseverence, she was able to make her idea of being a superstar singer a reality.
