Britney bound for sales record

With Jive Records claiming that Britney Spears' sophomore album, "Oops!...I Did It Again," sold more than 500,000 copies on its first day of release, the teen sensation is poised to break the SoundScan record for highest sales in a week by a solo female artist. Mariah Carey's 1995 Columbia album "Daydream" holds the record of 760,000 units. Dick Odette, senior VP of the Musicland retail chain, said, "I'm guessing the Spears album will scan over 1 million units this week."

Though Spears' sales spurt on Tuesday was not as big as labelmates 'N Sync's estimated 1 million first-day sales, Sean Sweeney, VP of Newbury Comics, said, "It will definitely be the second strongest of the year for us. We sold about 6,000 'N Sync albums on its first day, and we sold about 2,000 Britney albums on its first day."
