The BET performance

To begin with, the musical arrangement was horrendous to my ears. I was glad that Mariah had decided to do something different with the song. Too often her performances seem like carbon copies of the studio version. I remember after the Daydream Tour had finished in London, I thought to myself, yeah, she was fantastic, but man I could have stayed at home and played the CD. Doing something differently musically instead of vocally is brave and also adds a whole new dimension to the song. I thought the strings were interesting and, to be honest with you, I never thought much of the studio version's backing track in the first place, so it was nice to hear it done differently.

Second I'd like to comment about Mariah's appearance. I don't see what was wrong with her dress or hairstyle. I guess it's all a matter of personal taste, but I thought her dress looked classy and sophisticated - at least she didn't come out in a bra and hotpants like she loved doing during the Glitter era. She looked dignified and sexy and, as always, beautiful.

Lastly, and most importantly, Mariah's voice. I will throw my hands up here and say that yes, I have heard Mariah sing a lot better. I have also heard her sing a lot worse. Without You Top of the Pops 1994 and Emotions Des O'Connor Show 1991 to name just two. The fact that Mariah is one of the few artists these days who still sings live every chance they get should be reward enough. I'd like to see the people criticising her sing one line like she can. As for her voice "breaking" at the end - I thought this was the best part of the performance. I don't want Mariah to sing with crystal clear vocals all the time. The hoarseness and sharpness made you feel the song, feel how raw everything is, and was frankly more real sounding than any studio could ever concoct.
