BBC Radio 2 interviews Mariah

BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans caught up with Mariah Carey for an interview backstage at London's Live 8 show yesterday, July 2nd. Following are excerpts from the interview.

Mariah: You know so many people from America, so many of my friends just got on planes to come and see Pink Floyd and see The Who and are freaking out. People don't get on planes from America like that anymore. So this is a huge, huge, huge deal to the world, it's amazing.

Chris: Does Mariah Carey get nervous at things like this?

Mariah: I was pretty nervous for one but you know I think it was cool because you're close to the people, you know what I mean? Even though I was I don't know like how this is gonna go over with me with this crowd that's really here to see The Who, and to see Pink Floyd and to see all the you know, great rock legends and stuff like that so I felt good up there because it's so nice to see people singing my new song which is like "ohh, they know this, okay that's cool" and then you know just to be there with the choir, the African Kids' Choir was a great moment for me.

Chris: I thought they were your children.

Mariah: Yeah yes, they are my children as well. No, just kidding. But seriously, they do represent 11 million orphaned children in Africa who you know they're survivors. All their parents had died of AIDS, and yeah they're survivors and they're doing this thing. And the people who support them and brought them into this choir are just like an amazing thing for them. So I'm happy they're part of the show tonight.

Chris: Now what time were you told you were gonna be on?

Mariah: Oh I have no idea. I just show up whenever they say. Everybody lies to me everytime anyway 'cause they know I'm gonna be late. [laughs]
