Fool Mariah, isn't true

Throughout the years, rock stars have been an attractive source for stories and scandals, many of these have reached legendary proportions. Despite what you may believe, a significant part of these are nothing but urban legends, which mean they are popular stories that have been taken as facts.

There are a couple of stories related to statements made by Mariah Carey. These statements have been misunderstood or edited with the evil purpose of forming a wrong impression of Mariah Carey. Often these statements caused that many people who know Mariah now think she is a fool.

The latest story is about Mariah's fears to be contaminated with germs. According to In Touch Magazine, during a radio interview conducted after she performed at the Live 8 concert in London, she interrupted a conversation with Capital FM disc jockey Johnny Vaughan to request an antiseptic hand wipe. Moments earlier, she had shaken hands and signed autographs for the excited fans gathered outside the studio.

The most wicked story is related to hunger in the world, and it was created in 1996. The false statement declared that Mariah apparently said: "When I see on TV those hungry children around the world, I just can't stop crying. I'd like to be as skinny as them, but without the flies and misery around."

This false declaration was made up, and it was one of many stories that even today are spread on Internet. In this case, the electronic source was a publication on the net called Cupcake, which quoted an interview that Carey gave to the British magazine "Vox", which also took fragments from the English newspaper The Independent. With no verification, the note was spread as water through Internet. This statement was not only sent to E-mail accounts, but also published on important sources such as The San Francisco Chronicle, and radio networks such as Radio 1 and World Entertainment News Network.

Three years later, and basically as a consequence of the first declarations, Mariah was victim of another nonsense statement. This new fake story said that during an interview made by CNN, the broadcaster asked Mariah for her opinion on the recent death of King Hussein of Jordan, she allegedly said: "I'm really moved, he was a really close friend of mine. I think Jordan was the best basketball player the world's ever met. We definitely won't see anyone like him ever." The made-up story hinted a confusion between the King and the basketball legend, Michael Jordan.

The truth is that Mariah never made such stupid statements to CNN or to any other source. All these urban legends were made up to create an ignorant and selfish persona for the diva. These false stories belong to a type of gossip created to spread something like a campaign against stars who reached fame and fortune in a relatively easy way.
