Island Def Jam Music Group conquers the charts

The Island Def Jam Music Group gains a historic foothold on the charts this week, with three albums bulleted inside the Soundscan top 5 - Mariah Carey's triple-platinum The Emancipation Of Mimi at #3 (on sales of 99,000 units), Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy's Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 at #4 (85,288), and Roc-A-Fella Records Presents... Teairra Mari making its debut at #5 (68,777). In the same week, the label sets a precedent with its 4th consecutive week in the #1 and #2 spots on the Billbord Hot 100, with Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" at #1 and 17-year old Rihanna's "Pon De Replay" at #2.
"2005 has brought renewed energy and spirit to the entire Island Def Jam organization, its artists as well as its staff," said Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. "The momentum established by Mariah Carey has been inspirational, and now Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella find themselves nurturing the careers of Young Jeezy as well as a pair of teenage sensations who have taken the world's imagination by storm, Teairra Mari and Rihanna. This is just the first wave of talented newcomers to be introduced by IDJ - more surprises are on the way."
"This is a very exciting time for us at IDJ," said Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, President & CEO of Def Jam Recordings. "We are breaking new artists and having a great time doing it. I feel like we are just starting to click on all cylinders."
"When great artists, great people and great energy all get together, the results become a lightening strike for today's new big hits," concurred Steve Bartels, President, Island Records & COO, Island Def Jam Music Group. "What an exciting time for all of us!"
The biggest single in the history of the Island Def Jam Music Group, "We Belong Together" secured Mariah Carey's place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time when it became her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, Mariah's latest single "Shake It Off", written by Mariah and co-produced with Jermaine Dupri, is already a smash as it is the Hot 100 Greatest Gainer for the 2nd week in a row, with over 65 million in audience. The music video for "Shake It Off", which was directed by Jake Nava, shot to #1 on MTV's TRL last week - only a week after the video's premiere. The clip is currently in heavy rotation on MTV, BET, and VH1. In its 17th week on the album charts, The Emancipation Of Mimi is triple-platinum in the U.S., with worldwide sales over 5 million units.
Jay "Young Jeezy" Jenkins, the multi-faceted Atlantian who began his company, Corporate Thugz Entertainment (CTE) back in 1996, has now broken out as both a member of a successful group (Boyz N Da Hood) as well as a Def Jam solo artist. Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 debuted last week at #2 on the strength of the top 10 R&B hit, "And Then What", which is now followed up by a second single, "Soul Survivor" featuring Akon. Young Jeezy performed both tracks on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live last Wednesday night, marking his network television debut.
Born in Barbados, Rihanna is a 17-year-old green-eyed beauty who comes on like a seasoned dancehall reggae queen on "Pon De Replay", a solidified mash-up hit whose place is staked out at the top of the Pop and R&B charts. Discovered by Shawn Carter, Rihanna is also a talented songwriter who co-wrote much of her debut album, Music Of the Sun, which will arrive in stores on August 30th.
17-year old Detroit native Teairra Mari wasn't even born when Eric B. and Rakim released "My Melody", the hip-hop classic that is sampled on her debut single, "Make Her Feel Good". The bass-heavy track is the introduction to her debut album whose title, Roc-A-Fella Records Presents... Teairra Mari makes it clear why she has been dubbed "Princess Of the Roc". Her influences are royal in their own rights: Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin (Teairra's grandmother sang back-up for the Queen of Soul), Prince, Sade, Patti LaBelle and Minnie Riperton. Motor City has a new driving force - Teairra Mari.
