Still can't shake off Kanye

For the third week in a row Mariah is forced to sit in the runner-up spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Kanye West not only retains his bullet at #1 on Hot Digital Songs list but also earns greatest gainer/airplay honors. Though "Shake It Off" is following in its predecessor's footsteps with an amazing amount of support at radio (bulleted at #1 atop Hot 100 Airplay) it is looking like it won't be enough to overcome Kanye West whose "Gold Digger" is now a huge hit at both radio and digital outlets. This Tuesday will mark the release of the remix of "Shake It Off" to digital outlets (and likely the last hurrah to get it to #1 by IDJ). If that remix can garner enough digital sales then perhaps Mariah can secure her 17th #1. However the remix to "We Belong Together" was nowhere near as big at digital outlets as the original.

Speaking of the song that just won't quit, "We Belong Together" inches up one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in its 24th week. As if "We Belong Together" hasn't set enough personal best records for Mariah this week it adds another. With 20 weeks in the top ten, "We Belong Together" has now spent more weeks in the top ten than any other single in Mariah's entire career, yes even "One Sweet Day". This week it is a lofty #3 sitting right beside "Shake It Off" at #2. The two singles also sit side by side on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart where "Shake" is at #3 and "Together" at #4. Here too it seems like "Shake It Off" will have to settle for a #2 peak. Bow Wow's "Like You" featuring Ciara is what prevented Mariah from collecting another #1 on this chart. One might say that turn-about is fair play since Mariah prevented Bow Wow's "Let Me Hold You" featuring Omarion from reaching #1 here because of "We Belong Together".

Mariah's success with "Shake It Off" is certainly a big reason why "The Emancipation Of Mimi" just refuses to die even though just about every album that has been released since then has long left the upper regions of the Billboard 200. Mariah is sitting pretty once again at #5. As has been noted here "plenty" of time this is indeed the lowest position this album has had since its release. No question that Mariah is the biggest success story of this year.
