Merry Christmas returns to Billboard

Just last week Billboard started their Top Holiday Album chart survey as they do every holiday season and this week Merry Christmas sells enough copies to re-enter the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart at #30. Look for this album to continue to climb in the coming weeks and for the modern Christmas classic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" to re-enter various singles recurrent charts.

But enough of looking back, let's look at what is going on today. Maria's latest single "Don't Forget About Us" makes a bold 11-4 move on the Hot 100 Airplay chart but sits at #17 on the Hot 100. Of course the song is lacking any sales points but this week is a particularly difficult week for songs with no sales points as the vast majority of commercially available singles see healthy gains as we approach the holiday season. At the time of this writing "Don't Forget About Us" doesn't seem to be widely available at various digital outlets. Once it is it will give a healthy boost to the song on the Hot 100.

This week is the last week of the Billboard chart year. Of course it has been an incredibly successful year for Mariah as her album and her #1 hit "We Belong Together" look to contend for several Billboard awards. Mariah herself seems a shoo-in as a finalist for Female Artist of the Year where she will likely compete with Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, and Ciara.

Kanye West's "Gold Digger" ends its run at #1 after ten consecutive weeks. Chris Brown earns his first #1 with "Run It". Madonna leaps to #14 with "Hung Up" which has been a much bigger sales hit than an airplay hit thus far. The Pussycat Dolls earn their second consecutive top ten hit with the ballad "Stickwitu". Meanwhile on the album chart country superstar Kenny Chesney debuts at #1 forcing the soundtrack to "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" to debut in the runner-up spot. And almost a year after its release, Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" re-enters the top ten at #10.
