Mariah's an inspiration
The Sunday Mail asked some of Australia's top musicians and industry giants to delve into their closets, dig out some long-lost memories and share the record that made them the person they are today. Simone Stacey, singer of the famed Australian R&B duo, Shakaya said it was Mariah Carey's Music Box for her.
"Whenever I was feeling down as a teenager, I'd play Mariah Carey's Hero and it would give me strength. My parents were very strict in the church and I was never allowed to do all the things my friends were doing, like going to the movies or to dances. I used to get teased about it. So I'd take my cassette player and headphones down to the beach, play Hero and have a little sob. It would always calm me down and soothe me. Mariah got me through some tough times; she really taught me to look into myself and realise that what the other kids were doing wasn't really worth getting so upset about. I learnt to deal with things that way." (Mariah Daily)
