Craig J. tops Billboard chart with Mariah Carey remix

A remix by Emoto's Craig J. and his partner Ralphi Rosario of the Mariah Carey hit Don't Forget About Us has reached Number 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts. Craig J. and Rosario, who have previously teamed up for remixes of such artists as Ricky Martin, Madonna and Rod Stewart, produced both Club and Radio remixes of the song. Don't Forget About Us comes from Carey's smash hit comeback album Emancipation of Mimi on Island Def Jam.

The two remixes give the song a funkier, up-tempo feel than the original. "We wanted to maintain the integrity of the song and Mariah's vocal while giving it a bump and energy," Craig J. explained. "We did that by using a live bass and more organic rhythm elements than we typically employ in a remix. That gave it a freshness that we liked." Both the club and album mixes are available on a variety of Mariah Carey remix compilation CDs.

Don't Forget About Us is that latest in a string of hit remixes for Ralphi and Craig J. The duo's remix of the Rod Stewart classic Da Ya Think I'm Sexy reached Number 2 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart. Their remix of Ricky Martin's I Don't Care reached Number 3 on that same chart.

When not remixing pop songs, Craig J., as Craig Snider, heads Emoto's Chicago office and produces original music for commercials. He sees his two roles as complimentary and believes that remixing is an under-utilized process in advertising. "Advertising agencies could get more value out of the music they employ in ads by remixing it to suit the tastes of different segments of their market," he said. Through remixing, a single track could be easily retooled to appeal to an urban or rural market, or to an older or younger demographic."
