Mariah Carey's very personal movie

Mariah Carey worked past midnight on the streets of downtown New York shooting her first starring movie role, in All That Glitters, on September 26. In the film, directed by Chicago Hope's Vondie Curtis-Hall, Carey plays Billie, an aspiring singer in the Manhattan club scene of the early '80s. The story is based on Carey's own idea and sounds a bit like art imitating life, right down to the character's struggle with her multiracial identity (Carey's father is black and Venezuelan; her mother is Irish American).

But the pop star says, "The film is more about [Billie] getting in touch with herself and her mother, because she gets taken away from her mom at an early age," something Carey herself did not experience. (In the scene pictured here, BIllie sees a homeless woman whom she suspects is her estranged mother.)

After her small role as an opera singer in last year's comedy The Bachelor, Carey has made an ambitious foray into the movie business: She is coproducing All That Glitters, plays the lead and has recorded the soundtrack. All this, combined with the personal nature of the plot, is taking it's toll. "At times in this film, I have been an emotional wreck," she says. Nevertheless, "It's good I have this outlet to release my feelings otherwise I'd have to live with a therapist."
