Mariah's minions get Careyed away

Mariah Carey. Wow. At the VH1 Save the Music Foundation Gala Thursday, "Mimi" looked amazing, smelled of cocktails, and had an escort detail larger than an Iranian president addressing the United Nations. Her nine assistants performed a ballet of maintenance on the teetering diva all night, keeping her flawless. One handmaiden was solely responsible for dispensing breast tape. Another wore a belt with brushes and hair spray to the dinner; a third brought portable hot rollers.

And like the heavenly body she is, when Miss Carey blazed onto the stage to accept her honor, she was the brightest star at Lincoln Center. But look - there's John Mayer! "I was lucky to grow up in a town with a lot of money for music education - I represent what happens with the proper funding," he told us at the benefit to keep music in schools. "I was into music at a very early age, so that when I got my first guitar at 13, I was totally hooked." We kind of imagined you on your mother's kitchen floor, banging on pots and pans? "Uhhhh, that's a little 'American Idol' cliche, but sure."

The least diva-ish of the night was Mayor Bloomberg, who filmed his opening of the show to an almost-empty tent a good hour before anyone else turned up. And you'll be pleased to know Hizzoner promised he wouldn't sing.
