BMI honors go to Carey and Bolton

Michael Bolton and Mariah
Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton were named songwriters of the year Tuesday night to highlight the 42nd annual Broadcast Music Inc. Pop Music Awards honoring the past year's top songwriters and music publishers. Calvin Lewis and Andrew J. Wright's "When a Man Loves a Woman" was named song of the year, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was named the most-performed college song, and Warner Music Group was tabbed as publisher of the year in other highlights of the ceremony, held last night at the Wilshire Beverly Regent Hotel.

BMI president/CEO Frances Preston hosted the black-tie ceremonies, in which citations of achievement went to the writers and publishers of the 67 most performed songs on radio and television from the fourth quarter of 1991 through the third quarter of 1992. Carey and Bolton led the songwriters field with three citations each. Carey's top tunes were "Can't Let Go", "Emotions" and "Make It Happen", all from her sophomore album, "Emotions".

Bolton hit with "Love Is a Wonderful Thing", "Missing You Now" and "Steel Bars", all from his album "Time, Love & Tenderness". Lewis and Wright's "When a Man Loves a Woman" - a hit for Bolton - was the most-performed song of the year, thus winning BMI's song of the year designation. Warner Music Group grabbed top pubbery honors with 15 citations.
