Mariah Carey labeled a show off

Irish music legend, Phil Coulter, has launched an astonishing attack on pop diva Mariah Carey, labeling her "inhuman". The easy-listening star, whose songs have been covered by an array of stars from Elvis Presley to Sinead O'Conner, says the curvy American is "a show-off" for tinkering with other people's songs and being over-elaborate with her warbling.

He says, "What she does to other people's songs is inhuman. My fuse is getting shorter and shorter with singers who won't leave a song alone. Show-offs really peeve me. I feel like shouting out 'If your voice is that good and the song is that good and you chose the song, then sing the bloody thing and don't rewrite it!' "

Phil says he knows first-hand how hard songwriters have to work to get the best phrases and melodies. He adds, "After years even, you can say the song is finally honed and polished, it's done. Then along comes someone like Mariah Carey and deconstructs it. If she wants to write, let her write."
