Mariah Carey dishes diva demands
Sunday 6 April 2008
Mariah Carey's capacity for ultra-demanding behaviour appears to know no bounds, if
reports detailing her ridiculous tour demands are to be believed. Carey, who has just
passed Elvis Presley as the record holder for the most No.1 US singles, visited the UK
to promote her new album E=MC2 last week.
The Daily Mail reported that Carey flew in a $108,000 antique table from New York to sign
autographs on. She also requested her hotel install a $21,000 gym next to her penthouse
suite, even though she was staying for just a few days.
According to the report, Carey's Jack Russell terrier travelled to the UK by private jet
and was chaperoned around town in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes. Carey's prima donna
behaviour continued when she arrived two hours late to an appearance at fashion store
Selfridges, leaving police struggling to contain legions of fans spilling on to the street
But stopping London's notoriously congested traffic for two hours wasn't enough. The
38-year-old cancelled an interview on a London radio station because she was "not a morning
person". She rescheduled another because of problems transporting her entourage of 15
bodyguards, stylists, hairdressers, publicists and managers to the interview.
But Carey played down her reputation as a freakishly demanding diva. "I can be difficult
and a little bit rigid about what I want," she was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying.
"I don't think I'm demanding enough."
The singer's extravagant behaviour was nothing new. When she visited London in 2005, Carey
demanded she be driven around her hotel at 2am until she could make return to the hotel
via a red carpet lined with white candles.
