The-Dream turned Carey duet fantasy into reality

R&B singer/songwriter The-dream hatched a cunning plan to snag Mariah Carey for his song My Love - by spreading news of the duet before he'd even approached the superstar. The-Dream - the lyricist behind Rihanna's smash hit single Umbrella - reveals he penned the lyrics of the track with the Heartbreaker singer in mind, but had no idea whether Carey or her Island Def Jam label boss Antonio "L.A." Reid would approve the duet.
So the star began to name-check Carey in his interviews and talk about the joint project - and that prompted Reid to get in touch and help turn the hitmaker's dreams into a reality. He tells XXL magazine, "I wrote that record and immediately thought, this is a great record for me and Mariah, if she wants to do it. The next morning I had an interview, and I'm like, 'Yeah, I got Mariah on this record called My Love' - knowing damn well I hadn't even asked her to get on it. L.A. (Reid) was like, 'What the hell is he talking about?' But they called M.C. (Carey), and she got the record and was like, 'I f**kin' love it.' I'm like, 'My hunch was right, I just spoke it into existence.' "

Edward (45,603) by Shelly from United States

I misunderstood why you brought up the starving kids comment, I thought you were saying that all stars make dumb remarks sometimes. But anyway, I'm glad Mariah didn't say it. Yeah, I never like when she shades any other artists, why even mention them. Most of the time she doesn't though. Why do interviewers always have to bring up other artists? It... read more

Money ($*/...) and starving children (45,602) by Shelly from United States

Mimi L, I like your idea. Jet plane would probably be better because that's what it says in the song. She does look gorgeous in those pics. She looks like she's a really healthy 30 year old, her skin. I loved the shoes and that her toned legs reemerged. I'm so glad she didn't really say that about the starving children. I had heard that before but ... read more

And I dream the impossible dream (45,601) by Bill from UK

I never thought this was a reference to "The Impossible" from MOAIA, but more likely a reference to the very popular song if the same name, reading the lyrics they seem very Mariah-y about strife and fighting for what you know is right, even if it is to your detriment. I love the song, and it's on my wish list for Mariah to cover (and has been for ... read more
